Alex began working in the trade in Wellington, New Zealand in 1981 and completed his formal training, graduating with merit at the Welsh School of Violin Making in 1991. He took sole charge of the workshop of Classic Violins in Penshurst, Kent and was head of the workshop at Sandra Wagstaff Violins in Hong Kong before establishing Alex W Grant Violins in Melbourne in 1996.
Alex devotes most of his time to repairs and complex restoration projects for clients Australia wide. His output of new instruments is therefore small but he always tries to keep some making project on the go. He currently favours a beautiful ‘G’ form Stradivari from 1716 and a slightly altered Guarneri Del Gesu from 1733 for violin models. His cello is based on an early 19th century Thomas Kennedy, and he is also inspired by the ‘forma B’ Stradivari.
Alex has been instrumental in organising violin making conferences, is a founding member of the AVMA and a member of the Entente Internationale des Maitres Luthiers et Archetiers d’art.
