Martin Schuster

Martin Schuster was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he was involved in the city’s rich classical music life from an early age. Martin studied cello with the principal cellist of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, Jürgen Wolf, performed chamber music in student ensembles, and played and toured Europe with the Düsseldorf Youth Symphony Orchestra while in secondary school.

After completing an introductory course in violin making by the Cremonese-trained makers Julia de Lucca and Antonio Carriedo in Coesfeld, Germany in 1983, Martin attended the Newark School of Violin Making from 1985 to 1988 (awarded Diploma NSVM, 1988). From 1989 to 2001 he worked as a violin maker and restorer in the master workshops of Joost van der Grinten (Amersfoort, the Netherlands), Peter Körner (Mainz, Germany) and Gerriet Groth (Wiesbaden, Germany). In 2001 Martin established his own workshop in Melbourne, Australia.
